Project 8 - The Common Denominator
1. The art piece that I have displayed in the art piece above is the technique of applying spray paint, as you can see with each individual doll I have taken the time to paint each one separately with the medium of spray paint. One of the pitfalls of this mediums which is what I struggled with is to perfectly apply the medium without it getting into any wanted areas of the object which was very difficult which led me to the resolution of using tape and such to restrict the boundaries where the paint could and could not go.
2. On the week that my eighth art piece was due I went to a dinner at a family friends house and noticed that in the Russian culture they have dolls to represent fertility and unity into their family structure. What I found interesting is the craftsmanship as well as the incredible amount of detail that made all these dolls fit into each other as well as the great meaning of it all representing one as the biggest doll holds all the smaller dolls. As I began to analyze the dolls and brainstorm of ways I could incorporate into my theme in my art pieces I came up with the idea of creating a series of dolls in order to represent unity amongst a global society.
3. When I commenced the making of my art project I thought I could exhibit this series of dolls on a circular globe with the globe representing the earth and the dolls representing the humans that occupy the globe that we inhabit. When I started to build and construct the art piece gravity told me otherwise, the hot glue that I was using was not strong enough to hold the falling dolls on the globe, I decided to buy a bigger globe but soon I realized that it would be extremely heavy and that it would not work when I would hang the piece, which is what I was planning on doing. After I experimented with two globes and wasted about ten dolls I decided to use a flat piece of would in order to display the dolls on.
4. What I would have considered doing over is the issue that I described in the last question, the medium that I displayed my dolls on. Due to the gravitational pull of the earth I was not able to display my dolls on a spherical surface which was the original desire of my art project.
5. I only used one medium in the making of this piece and it was spray paint, the application of the medium was the same on all the subjects that were displayed in the piece as well. One thing that I noticed and was my main purpose in the execution of this piece was that the color scheme that I used seems to be very different as the last, but the differences that they all have can be seen as a similarity in the context of human life. My theme being human life displays the various passages that we endure cannot be repetitive because with each individual they have a story to share. This then leads me to no matter how far apart and how indifferent we maybe we are still united because no matter how uniform life might appear to one it cannot be.

Project 7
1. Here in the art piece displayed above I have mastered the technique of control. This might seem strange but with such precise lines that you have to follow there is very little room from error. What this technique overlaps with is the skill of application, I mastered this through controlling and maneuvering the medium that was being used in the creation of this project. I have also learned how to apply mediums in small confined areas as you can see above the piece is composed of many different small compartments that make up the piece as a whole.
2. Over spring break I had the chance of visiting a museum called the MASS MoCA. The museum is a modern art institution that displays contemporary pieces which inspired my piece that I am presenting here. At the MASS MoCA the aesthetic that was created was a sterile, abstract, and crazy environment. Many artists were displayed their, such as Sol LeWitt who art is very black and white with non repetitive brush strokes, James Turrell who used light as a medium in his art piece to create a mesmerizing view. I used that to incorporate into my art piece because it was an aesthetic that I have never experienced with this being my first time at a modern art institution. With my theme being human life and the development that we all go through this was a wonderful way to convey that by displaying the different emotions and hectic progress that we call life. The reasoning as to why I chose this aesthetic is because although I have witnessed these aesthetics over the phone and media it was moving to a different level when I got to observe the power of these pieces that were displayed.
3. When I was first making the piece I initially thought it was going to be a very zoomed in self portrait as you can see in the middle, but I started to compose this piece before I went on spring break which was a very important focal point because it is where I found my aesthetic that inspired this piece. Even though my initial drawing was completely different than what it ended up being the meaning of the piece would go so much further if I were to incorporate and work around the initial drawing displaying my theme in its full entirety, human life and development.
4. What I would have to consider doing over is the the patterns that I chose, more thought into the patterns would create diversity in the placement of patterns. I feel that there are many patterns that are too similar to each other and if there were to be an opportunity to change where they were than the composition of the piece would benefit from it.
5. I have used a very subtle amount of charcoal on this piece which is a very common medium with these art pieces. With the theme of human life and its development being present it is all a common motif that can be found in the art pieces. What outweighs the similarities in my art pieces are the differences due to the fact that my theme is one that has to be evolving with every pieces I do in order to display development there will not be many similarities that you will find that aren't common mediums or themes.

Man on a sand dune - Project 6
1. The technique that I mastered here in this project is the use of water color; this is both a struggle and a success in the way that due to its very difficult application I have learned a technique on how to use the medium. The most difficult part of this is the struggle of applying the water color due to the fact that if you were to put too much then it is very difficult to blend out once it has been applied.
2. The inspiration that I used was Claude Monet in the way that he was famous for the composition of his paintings and the blending technique that he used in order to create an impressionist art piece. What I did here was model the shifting of unchangeable factors as well as the dabbing that he used to blur harsh transitions and integrate all the elements of the art piece into one uniform composition.
3. Once I started to apply water color I decided that I wanted to make the art piece much stronger; I was originally going to faintly paint each subject in the art piece but soon realized that if I wanted to get the effect I wanted out of my art piece then I would have to strongly paint on the medium.
4. What I would do over is the focal point of the painting; the medium that I used to draw the object was charcoal but I soon realized that I did not like the mediums in the same piece. I decided that the contrasting mediums were more of a bother than a plus; I observed that the difference in textures when you observed the photo did not serve it justice. This is my reasoning as to why I believe that I should change the mediums used.
5. What my piece shares in common with the other pieces is that it still has the same bright positive colors as the other pieces as well as the tone.

Something interesting about your life
“I studied abroad my junior year of college in Dunedin which is in the south island of New Zealand, on a break from school my brother Brian came out to visit. We did a lot of hiking, we went to hike wait I think was called the Roratunga trail. You have an option of hiking in and hiking out, you can take a small plane and either be picked up or dropped off. We thought it would be more exciting to be picked up at the end of the 4 day trip, and so that is what we went with. So, we hiked for 4 days, staying in various cabins along the way cause they have a hut system. Crossing big streams and rivers on wire bridges and stuff, it was super cool. We arrive at our destination, and we are going to be picked up the next day. So, we have a feast with most of our remaining food, the next day is overcast, we wait at the landing strip all day, no plane arrives. We had eaten most of our food the night before, when we were feasting, so we started to ration. The next day we waited at the air strip all day, and it was nice out, and about 5 o’clock the sun set about 7, we figured out that no one was going to pick us up. So my brother and I were about 36 miles in from the nearest road, so we hiked about maybe it was about 8 miles that day. Part of it was through the night, to try to get closer to the road, we were running out of food. I fell once on the trail and luckily fell on something so I did not fall down the hill, I do not know how steep it was it was dark. The next mile we hiked another 10-12 miles, so my mileage was a little off but the last day it wasn’t. We met another traveler and told him about our predicament, he gave us some food, because we were basically out of food. We were to the point when we were opening up peanut butter jars and licking it out because we were running out of food. He gave us some food but he was worried because he was suppose to get picked up, he did not want the same thing to happen. So that is 2 days of us hiking back and on the last day I was determined to make it back to the road cause I had an exam the following day, so it was right before exams. I hiked 20 miles with my brother, he was exhausted and did not want to continue but I was determined to take my final, so then I hike the last six miles by myself. So I hiked 26 miles in a day, then I got to the road and it was dark out and I was by myself, which was a poor choice because it started to rain. I sat on the road for about 2 hours till a car passed, and they stopped and picked me up thankfully. It was the owner of a hostile, I am not kidding, and he was going the wrong way but my prospects of making it back for the exam the next day were minimal. So I took a ride to his hostile and he opened up the snack shack for me and I ate a ton of food. I slowly made my way back to Dunedin where my exams were, when we got back to civilization, I got back before my brother, he had to hike out, and we talked to the company they neglected to tell us that if it was overcast a plane would not come. Needless to say I got a full refund and I got excused from my exam however Colorado College does not accept physical education credits, so I didn’t get even get credits for the class that I hiked so hard to get back for. That is my story.”

11th grade student at GWHS Worst childhood memory: “Summer before my sophomore year my mom got diagnosed with leukemia in her first biopsy which is a minor procedure she herniated and almost died. She spent a lot of time in the ICU. We got over that now but then she started to drink while getting chemo so now she has permanent brain damage. I take care of her now. I kinda raise her now, she acts more like a teenager which makes us good friends now that we’re more peers. I do the shopping and the cleaning and all that. But it’ll make me a great adult later in life. Though I’ll be slightly mentally unstable.” |

‘Best Person in the World’ GWHS Student 11th grade Unique Life Experience - Childhood Memory “When I was younger me and my brother had this place in our room where we used to put pillows and stuff. We used to jump on top and we used to fight each other and stuff so like, you know that is a great memory because me and my brother are like really close and like we love each other. And yeah.” |
Micheal Hammond/Mr.Hammond
Math Teacher at GWHS First step into moving into this career and why “So uh, I graduated from the University of Delaware, then I moved into Philadelphia and became a Civil Engineer and Civil Engineering was not what I thought it was going to be. First of all I figured out I could not do the office life, the 9-5 life did not agree with me and it did not seem like I fit into the Engineering world. So then I moved out here to Denver and immediately went to school to get my teachers licensure because I am more of a social person, I would like to talk to people and everything all day instead of just sitting at a computer trying not to fall asleep. Best choice career wise, being a teacher or moving up the ladder “Being a teacher, no doubt about it, I actually have no interest in moving up the ladder: I believe I am going to retire a teacher because I enjoy it so much. So I am a teacher now and in 30 years I will be a teacher. So I do not have any desire to move up the ladder. Feelings and attitudes about the teacher strike “That is a difficult one, for me because it is pretty obvious that teachers get, need to be paid more in my opinion. I try not to complain about teacher pay because it is not like I got into this job and thinking this was a high paying job, right? Nobody gets hired as a teacher and says later wait? We get paid what, right? But, that does not mean we can not fight for a better pay there is a difference between complaining and fighting, so I do believe that we should fight for a better pay. With that being said, we do not get paid a lot right now, so it is not like we have a lot of savings, so to go on strike is very difficult for us teachers if we loose one week of our, you know, pay check. So it is going to be difficult for us, I just hope DPS and the union can get together and come to a compromise so we do not miss any school.” Budgeting for 2019 - 2020 in DPS Well I’m uh, Im very concerned that it should have been carved out by now. I remember that last year when we went on the walk out to kind of initially voice our frustrations so they have had a year to work something out. So to me, no, it should not be a whole other year, I think they should have something carved out and it should happen quickly. |
Project 4 - Go Big Piece
1. The technique that I have bettered through the process of this piece is painting in confined areas, as you can see I am painting in small confined boxes for this painting. The difficulty of painting in a confined area requires a steady hand and much experience, as I have never done this before I have had to do a round of trial and error on my final piece which caused me to take it very seriously.
2. The inspiration for my art piece was actually an add for a Sephora makeup product, the company was displaying how they had shades of all different types of skin tones. This inspired me because my theme is diversity and I felt that the best way to do it is through representing all different types of skin tones.
3. At the beginning of the painting process I was going to decide to blend them all in to create a Ombre look, but I realized that it would give each skin color its own box so it can be observed to its fullest extent. I acknowledge that I did not reach the entire spectrum of skin color on my painting as there are many different colors, too many to be shown in one painting.
4.The only thing I would consider re doing is using a stencil in the form that sometimes you can observe the overlap between boxes. To make the painting a little more organized it would be nice to use a stencil so that colors do not overlap and become messy.
5. What my piece shares in common with my other pieces is the theme that they share as well as the planning process of my portrait. The mediums that my for my no experience needed used are the same for this painting.

Project 3 - No Experience Needed Piece - 10/7/18
1. The techniques that I used here that I both tried and mastered have both been a challenge. One of the techniques that I have not yet mastered but significantly improved and have somewhat a hang of is painting. The way that I applied the paint is that I had to be very specific and precise in placing each individual dot and being careful to not smudge the paint which I yet still have to master. One of the techniques that I still have to improve on and have not mastered is using wire as a medium. The thing that I struggled with the most is to bend the wire into the form and shape that I desired.
2. The inspiration for my art work was actually from an interior designer, I stumbled across an article online about a celebrities house decorated by Jeff Andrews. In the house I saw a neon sign in bright pink that spelled out the words 'love me' and I thought to myself what a great way to embody my theme in a creative way. Though this wasn't in neon due to me being concerned about my safety but I felt that it was a great way to mimic the same concept.
3. At the beginning I was going to go for a bold pink color for the background to try to get my inspiration and piece as similar as possible to try to convey the same feeling. As the piece developed and I saw the size of the background as well as the effect of the wire, I decided to go for a more traditional version of hearts, in red. While I was in the observation of my art piece I felt that it was too bland, I then added a white background and gold hearts. The composition of the piece compliments the size and shape of the art project, the decision that I made to change the color and the mood of the piece was the best decision I ever made.
4. The only thing that I would consider doing over is the bending and formation of the piece as the wire came out too rough, I feel that I would need more practice or strength to bend the wire in the proper way. I would have to either acquire some materials that are proper for the bending of the wire or I would have to practice more to get the wire into a smooth looking way.
5. The only thing that my other pieces and this one has in common is that they share a common theme, diversity. Other than that I have used all different mediums to demonstrate my art projects and they do not share much in common.

Project 2 - Social Issue Piece
1. The technique that I have mastered here the most is to learn how to blend colored pencils. I have also learned the technique of sketching, in this project I sketched the hand and then moved on from there, usually I would print out a picture of a hand and then draw a grid to match both of them up but for this one I ambitiously drew the hand from scratch.
2.The inspiration for my artwork was actually from a mural when I was in Miami, there was a mural representing all the Brazilian immigrants that were in Miami and how they were being exploited and mistreated. I felt that I could convey that same message and try to put a piece that tries to promote change.
3.When I commissioned this piece the size was already a compromise, I was going for a huge poster sized piece of paper but then I realized that I had two weeks to get it done and I thought to myself it would look a lot better if I did not rush it and took my time on a smaller piece of paper. The hand was going to be a skin colored hand but I thought with all the crazy colors contributing to the composition of the piece that I would have to do the same with the hand. The last thing I changed was the language the words are in, I thought to myself to portray the right image and feeling I would want it to look a certain way. With the handwriting that I would be able to write in I decided that Japanese would look far better and that the perception of the piece to observers would catch their eyes.
4. What I would attempt to do over again would be the proudest area of this poster, the hand. Even though I made a huge milestone it still did not turn out perfect. What I would do is to print out a photo of a hand to draw a grid on the paper so the hand can turn out proportionally sized to the paper as well as detailed.
5. What this piece shares in common with my other pieces is the theme that I am going by as well as the principles that we learned during the Self Portrait lesson. In the self portrait lesson I learned how to work with charcoal and define lines, shape and texture with it. Other than that the only thing that my piece has in common with my other projects is the theme.

Project 1 - Self Portrait - 10/5/18
1. There are many techniques that I learned and tried during this self-portrait adventure. What I learned how to do very well is shade use the principle of value throughout this project by analyzing light and darkness and applying it to my portrait through the form of shading. A technique that I tried but have not mastered is the principle of shape, throughout the process of my self portrait I have struggled and learned through my mistakes of shaping my portrait through my facial features and such.
2. My inspiration for this drawing is Gustave Courbet though his self portrait in 1845 called Le Desespere. Through his own self portrait he instills great senses of contrast between light and dark which creates a beautiful aesthetic to the artwork as a whole. He also puts a great sense of emotion in the piece making facial expressions very obvious and very distinct, I tried to mimic its vividness through my emotions.
3. Through my piece I realized several different factors of what was going wrong. At my very first attempt I drew each individual body part such as they eyes, ears, and nose as a whole but examining my photo not each body part had its definite features in it. This made me had to realize and take into account the words "draw what you see." Value really determines these definite lines to each body part and determines whether or not some forms get to take place. As I started to redraw each facial feature to match the ones on the photo it became to look a lot more like me and began to feel like an actual self portrait, what I started to do differently is to use the principle of value throughout the whole portrait.
4. What I would attempt to do over again to be my actual body and neck form, in my opinion it seems to be way too uneven, this was one of the difficulties due to the fact that I was posing at a angle in my portrait making it hard to draw. On the left side you can see how unnatural my shoulder appears, what I seem to have did is make the slope to steep from my shoulder into mu arm form which I shouldn't have done, what I would have tried to attempt is to examine exactly how uneven my shoulders actually are and use the principle of value in any way I could so I could realistically make it better.
5. This piece matches up to the same values that we learned while drawing the still-life. While drawing the still-life we used value a lot to determine fine lines and shape which is exactly what we did in during our self portrait. We also used the principle of shape as well during both of the art pieces. The last but certainly not least element found in both art pieces is contrast, you can examine both pieces and find contrast between both lights and darks. What is certainly a reoccurring thread in these art pieces is the value of shape and color to define a art piece.
